Program Overview

In this presentation attendees will learn about the unique issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and couples in estate planning.  Other topics to be addressed include charitable planning techniques, issues related to parenting, and how to set up estate plans to protect your clients from potential litigation.

You will learn:

  • Unique issues facing LGBTQ+ individuals and couples in their estate planning
  • How to help unmarried couples legally protect each other
  • How to help married couples protect themselves in the event of divorce
  • Charitable planning opportunities pre- and post-death

Featured Speakers:

Lisa M. Cukier, JD is a Partner, Co-Chair of the Private Client Group, and Chair of the Fiduciary Litigation and Fiduciary Services Group at Burns & Levinson LLP in Boston. Her practice includes fiduciary representation, trust and estate dispute resolution and litigation, family crisis and family dispute resolution, sophisticated high-end divorce, divorce impacted by family trusts and family business, blended family planning and litigation, mental health and addiction related legal interventions, elder law, guardianship and conservatorship litigation, grandparents visitation matters, and elder financial exploitation and undue influence matters. Previously, Ms. Cukier was assistant general counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and Department of Mental Retardation (now DDS). As Special Assistant Attorney General at DMR, she prosecuted disabled person abuse cases for the Disabled Persons Protection Commission. She is a past president of the Massachusetts Family and Probate American Inn of Court and is presently serving on its Board of directors, serves on the program planning committee of the Boston Probate and Estate Planning Forum and serves on the networking committee of the Boston Estate Planning Council. Ms. Cukier has been recognized with the Best Lawyers designation from 2010 – 2022, the SuperLawyers designation from 2005-2022, the Massachusetts Bar Association Community Service Award in 2005, a National Law Journal Trailblazer in 2017, the Women Worth Watching recognition in 2018, Top Women of Law in 2019, and sat on the WBA Women Leaders Initiative for the 2020/21 year. Ms. Cukier is a graduate of Northeastern University and Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Ms. Cukier is a single mother raising her two high school aged children in Weston, Massachusetts.

Laura E. Fine, JD, LLM is a partner of the law firm of Sessions Fishman & Nathan, LLC. Laura received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology at Centenary College of Louisiana in her hometown of Shreveport in 2001. Laura graduated with her J.D. from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California in 2006. She then attended Tulane University Law School and received her LL.M degree in Comparative and International Law in 2007. She joined Lehmann, Norman, & Marcus in August of 2008 and Sessions Fishman & Nathan in January 2021. Her concentration is in the fields of estate planning, estate administration, and business law. She is admitted to practice in California and Louisiana. She is board certified as a specialist in Estate Planning and Administration from the Louisiana State Bar Association, a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy through the American College, and an Accredited Estate Planner through the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils. She is a board member of the New Orleans Planned Giving Council and a board member of the New Orleans Estate Planning Council. She is a committee member of the Louisiana State Law Institute – Trust Code Committee. She was also named a SuperLawyers Rising Star in 2016 and 2017.
