Health Care in Retirement – A Retirement Income Challenge and Opportunity

A startling statistic reveals that many couples in retirement today may have to dedicate 40% of their Social Security income to health care costs by age 70 ― up to 76% by age 87.*
Health care during one’s retirement years brings significant challenges when planning for sustainable income he or she cannot outlive. However, if you understand the challenges as well as how the health care system works, you can educate clients with strategies that may assist them with increasing health care costs and longevity. In turn, this can provide significant opportunities for you when advising your clients during the retirement-income planning process.
The Lafayette Life Insurance Company’s Advanced Markets Assistant Vice President Michael Buckner will discuss these challenges and opportunities when working with clients dealing with health care in retirement.

As Assistant Vice President of Lafayette Life Advanced Markets, Michael works with our advisors and Regional Sales Vice Presidents and focuses on developing and implementing strategies designed to promote advanced-markets sales. He also provides product training, general sales consultation, creative case-design assistance, and competitive information to the field. Mike also recommends product ideas for advanced markets and provides market and competitive information for input to the Product Development Committee.
Prior to Lafayette Life, Michael was the Senior Vice President of Advanced for two of the largest and fastest growing financial marketing organizations in the United States. In this role, Michael trained financial advisors on various advanced planning techniques and was a regular presenter on topics such as estate planning, distribution planning and Social Security planning.
Prior to Michael’s entry into the world of financial marketing organizations, he spent two years with Prudential Financial as the Director of Advanced Markets. His primary responsibility with Prudential included delivering presentations to advisors and clients in the areas of retirement distribution planning, estate planning, and Social Security. He also provided consultative technical support on retirement plans, distribution planning, estate planning and charitable giving techniques.
Before joining Prudential, Michael spent ten years at AXA Distributors, L.L.C. and AXA Advisors, L.L.C. As Assistant Vice President of Advanced Markets, he was in charge of AXA’s Retirement Planning Advanced Sales Team, in which he coordinated advanced sales strategies with wholesale annuity and pension distribution channels. He also provided technical and product support for a full range of qualified plans and estate planning vehicles.
Michael, who who has 27 years of advanced sales experience, holds the CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant), RICP (Retirement Income Certified Professional), CPC (Certified Pension Plan Consultant), QKA (Qualified 401(k) Administrator) and QPA (Qualified Pension Plan Administrator) designations. He is also a Defined Contribution Plan Specialist as recognized by the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries. He also holds FINRA Series 26, 7, 63, and 6 licenses, as well as the Ohio Life, Variable and Accident and Health Licenses. He received a B.A. in Communications Management at the University of Dayton with a concentration in Marketing and Economics.
Michael is married to his wife Desiree who is an estate and tax planning attorney. They have two boys and reside in Maineville, Ohio.
